Essential apps to reduce the stress of city living

Essential apps to reduce the stress of city living

More of us are living in cities than ever before. With that comes great freedom, opportunity and experiences, but it's not all rosy. We've picked out five apps that will help you stay sane while you're living in or visiting a bustling city.

The app that helps you relax amid frazzle: Remente

What it is: A pocket life coach that helps you stay calm and encourages reflection and self-care.

How it works: It combines psychology with brain and mental training to help users lead a happier and less stressful life. You can also track your mood and take insightful courses on different areas of life, such as mindfulness, sleep and stress.

How to get it: Available on iOS and Android. Free to download, with Premium Membership available for a fee.

The app that protects your belongings while out and about: Trov

What it is: A safety officer for the electronic belongings that you rely on.

How it works: It allows you to quickly insure common electronic items like laptops, cameras and phones, which is something many people forget to do . You can turn the insurance on and off with a simple swipe within the app, so you don't have to pay to cover items you aren't constantly using.

How to get it: Available on iOS and Android. Free to download, with price dependent on cover.

The app that helps you meet new people from abroad: Babbel

What it is: A language teacher that will help you make conversation with other nationality groups, whether you're in a modern UK city or abroad.

How it works: It helps you learn a new language quickly and easily regardless of your prior knowledge. All the content is based on real life situations, so the vocabulary covers things y'd be likely to use out and about. From the first lesson, you practice your language skills and work on your accent to build your confidence and knowledge.

How to get it: Available on iOS and Android. Free to download, with usage costing from £4.75 per month.

The app that helps you stay healthy when you're busy: Lifesum

What it is: A health tracker that lets you keep an eye on your personal goals, no matter how busy you are.

How it works: Using tech and psychology, it creates a tailored plan to help users live a happier and more balanced life. It enables you to monitor your diet closely, track your calories, log your meals and record how much water you drink – but all with a focus on your own goals (e.g. to lose weight, to build muscle or to just be healthier). More realistic than other apps of its kind, it shows how changing small, everyday habits can transform your life.

How to get it: Available on iOS and Android. Free to download, Premium Membership is also available for a fee.

The app that protects you from inner city pollution: Plume Air Report

What it is: A personalised air pollution monitor.

How it works: It pulls together data on pollution from monitoring stations around the world in order to give you real-time information on the levels of your pollution in your city. The readings are updated throughout the day, so you can decide to do things outside (like running or walking the dog) when the quality of air is best.

How to get it: Available on iOS and Android. Free to download.
